    It's sad that all these comments take the film at face value. The image escalates the lyrics of a "great escape" to an existential allegory. It shows how an obsession with the status quo, as personified by the two men, becomes a self-feeding Catch-22. The protagonist is unable to escape from the life he has worked so hard to statically define. After achieving his escape, he finds he is unable to break free of the pattern of his life.
