    they're different guitarists. steve vai plays that crazy and weird because frank zappa had a great influence on him, but that doesn't quit feeling from his playing. like you said, the guitar is almost an extension of his body, but it can be heard that he plays with a lot of feeling. and petrucci too. what petrucci has over vai is that he is more melodic, at least he has better liked or common meoldies. joe satriani has a great technique and feeling too
